The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization founded in 1882. At the heart of the organization is the motto, “We are men of faith and men of action". In 2015, the Knights achieved their highest level of charitable service ever volunteering more than 73.5 million hours of service” (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/todays-knights/what-we-do.html).
Like the Knights, we at ASRC know that volunteering opportunities are essential to those we serve. Volunteering can be a safe and accommodating way for individuals on the spectrum to build social and employability skills for the real world. The Knights of Columbus are now collaborating with ASRC to provide volunteer experiences to individuals with ASD throughout Connecticut.
These experiences vary from assisting with activities like the annual basketball and soccer tournaments, the winter Coats for Kids drive to weekly dinners hosted at area councils to raise money for community charitable causes. The volunteer experiences will vary throughout the state because there are 191 Knights councils in CT. ASRC will offer training and introductions to an area Knights Council once an Individual with ASD has expressed an interest in volunteering.
Upcoming volunteer experiences include:
• Basketball tournament (ages elementary to adult)
• Coats for Kids (18+)
